Dheeraj and Kristi - #WeddingThrowbackThursday

August 22, 2013 - by Nadya

Welcome to this week's #WeddingThrowbackThursday! Send us your #WTBT story and a couple photos to {nadya at thebigfatindianwedding dot com}

Dheeraj and Kristi first met in college at Washington University in St. Louis.  He had one of the few computers present in the dorms, and she liked playing online chess.  He asserts, to this day, that she let him win over and over.  They got married at the ripe old age of 23 and 22.

The couple ended up having two weddings, one in Houston, Texas on September 25th 1992 where they were married by a Justice of the Peace and the other, a formal Hindu wedding, seven months later in New Delhi.  The groom's parents took care of the proceedings for the latter, even making sure that Kristi was properly taken care of though it was only tradition to take care of their own side of the wedding.

On the day of the wedding, Dheeraj fell sick from food poisoning and continued through the ceremony despite.  He was actually unable to stand and was passed along from guest to guest during the sat phere to make sure he completed the seven circles.  He says that for some reason he felt much better after the wedding was over.

They have now been happily married for 21 years. So here's looking to a healthy 21 more!

Fusion Fix: Paan Ice Cream

A popular way to finish off a delicious Indian dinner is to eat a fresh, crunchy meetha paan to cleanse the palate and aid with digestion. Paan, often sold on Indian roadsides, is a betel nut leaf filled with tobacco or betel nuts, gulkhand (rose jelly), badishep (roasted fennel seeds), fruit preserves, nuts, and spices.
