Sukh & Abhishek's Sikh Punjabi Wedding in The Netherlands
Sukh and Abhishek had a beautiful ceremony at the Gurdwara followed by a reception at the Opera Zalencentrum, a restaurant/venue hall.
We had a chance to hear from Sukh about the wedding, so let's her story!
Tell us about the wedding
My wedding took place in July 2012 in Den Haag, The Netherlands. I am Sikh Punjabi and my husband is also Sikh Punjabi, so we had a traditional Sikh wedding. The ceremony was performed at the Gurdwara.
Before the arrival of the wedding day, there were four ceremonies each one with it's own respective ritual, which plays a very special, important role in order to complete the marriage.
What was the hardest about planning the wedding?
Usually Indian weddings are family oriented and are arranged by the families. Our parents had arranged and planned each festive functions therefore, I never had to go through the stress. But, brides always panic about what outfits to wear on which ceremony, jewellery, shoes, make up and the hair of course! I had a week to do all my wedding shopping in India. Stressful!
What was your favorite part of the wedding?
The best part of the wedding were the rituals which means a lot to every Indian bride. While the rituals were taking place, I had this certain feeling of mixed emotions, happy-sad, excited-scared. It made me feel special and important to my loved ones.
What one piece of advice would you give future brides-to-be?
Do not be nervous. Okay, being a little nervous is natural but with all the stress and nervousness it might spoil your appearance. So watch out and keep that smile on.
