6 Saffron-Inspired Wedding Eats & Treats

January 4, 2014 - by Shriya

Saffron is more than just a fancy (and super expensive) spice - it's versatile too! Saffron has amazing culinary purposes that can glam up just about any dish.

Saffron is known for its strong flavor and richness. It can complement any dish from dinner to dessert. A few strands of bright red saffron can make your wedding experience feel all the more extravagant.

Here's some bold ways to use saffron for your wedding:

Saffron Oil

Mixed with the scented stigmas of the cronus flower, concentrated saffron fragrance oil is a sure way to smell the love in the air! Saffron creates a light, flowery aroma with a hint of spice. Spritz some oil near the wedding mandap, buffet table, or centerpieces for a luxurious aroma. Saffron scents even come in candle or air freshener forms!

Saffron Cookies

Saffron is a great spice for any dessert, because it's sweet and light enough to go with just about any form of sugar. Wishful Chef shares a particularly scrumptious-looking saffron pistachio cookie recipe that would fit perfectly at any Indian wedding.

Saffron Rice

Have you even been in awe of some lovely, yellow-gold biryani for its bright, cheery color? The trick is saffron! Saffron adds a golden glow to a simple dish like rice and adds a flowery taste and fragrance to it as well. Ask your caterer if they can boil some saffron with a batch of rice or use it as a garnish to a basic rice dish - it's sure to add some luxury to the meal!

Saffron Cake

Have you considered serving your guests a saffron cake - either as the main wedding cake display, or just as a tea-time accompaniment? Saffron water - made with boiling water, ground saffron, and sugar - is an excellent flavor to mix into a plain white cake! Ask your caterer for ideas on incorporating saffron flavoring into your desserts - or make a light, sweet snack to present your guests with during all the pre-wedding celebrations.

Liquid Saffron

Saffron can release a powerful color and flavor when boiled with any liquid. It will transform water, milk, or even wine into a floral delight! Simply boil a few strands of saffron with hot water and allow it to infuse for 5-10 minutes. Any liquid saffron form can be served to your guests as a drizzle on top of ice cream or even as a warm, soothing drink.

Saffron Chai

If you want to add an extra special kick to the chai served in between ceremonies or during the reception at your wedding, consider mixing some fragrant saffron strands in there. Saffron goes well with ginger, pepper, and milk - making it the perfect accompaniment for a particularly sweet cup of chai.

Let the tea bag and saffron infuse with hot water together before you add milk or sugar. The result is a scent that is unmistakably floral and fabulous!
