What happens when you have a groom that loves to rap, a bride who loves to have fun, and a mixed Sindhi Gujarati wedding?
A TON OF FUN!
Sheena and Sagar were married at the San Jose, CA Gurdwara with a hot wheels wedding reception at the Blackhawk Auto Museum. Their wedding colors were pinks, reds, and oranges, while the reception featured cool blues and greens to compliment the museum.
Their story of how they met (and their first date) are so adorable that we just had to share it with you.
How did you meet?
Sheena and Sagar met while studying at NYUCD. A full year ahead of Sheena, Sagar played his seniority to his advantage. During his last semester, he found himself fortuitously teamed up with Sheena for a full day while on rotation in admissions clinic. Despite needing additional patients to graduate, Sagar gave all his patients to his junior, a kind gesture that she would remember.
A year later, towards the end of Sheena’s dental school career, Sagar and Sheena met for a dinner catch-up session — as friends. The conversation was lighthearted and fun, and Sheena was surprised to find how easy Sagar was to talk to. Ever the strategic planner, Sagar likes to consider that dinner their “first date.” Sheena was so clueless about it being a date that she refused to let Sagar pick up the bill. Sheena, on the other hand, did not quite catch on until after Sagar sent her a thoughtful message congratulating her on graduating dental school.
Amidst the chaos of moving out of NY, Sagar and Sheena managed to spend quality time together to determine that they wanted to continue to get to know each other long distance. Their relationship truly burgeoned while Sagar was still living in NYC and Sheena was starting her new life in Chicago.
Tell us about the wedding!
Our “big fat Indian wedding” was planned in the Bay Area, California. Since Sheena and Sagar have lived between CA, TN, NY, and IL, they had a lot of friends fly in from all over the US (and world!) for their special week.
Mehndi – The first official event took place at Sheena’s house in Los Altos, CA, where her aunts transformed the foyer into a beautifully decorated area fit for a princess! They wanted their friends and family to have a chance to get close, so Sagar’s family attended the special occasion. His two nephews had their first experience with mehndi, too!
Ceremony – While neither of Sheena nor Sagar are Sikh, Sindhis do follow Guru Nanak and Sheena’s parents were married in a Gurdwara in India. They chose to have their ceremony at the San Jose Sikh Gurdwara, which is located on the top of a hill and has an amazing view of the bay area. They lucked out with the weather – it was almost 80 degrees warmer than the frozen Chiberia they left behind!
Sagar’s Baraat was extremely fun and unique – his charismatic friends made it one of a kind and even the bride’s side joined in on the fun!
Sangeet – Sheena and Sagar had their Sangeet “Shahvas” event after the ceremony at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel. Their beautiful sisters emceed the perfect night of entertainment, raas, decorated food, dessert, and drinks!
Reception – The Blackhawk Auto Museum was another unique experience for their out-of-town guests, as Sheena and Sagar chose a vintage car museum for their reception location. Sticking with the theme, they did their first dance to “Come Fly With Me” by Michael Buble, and danced the night away with friends and family.
They ended the night by riding (and singing) in style back to the hotel on double decker Google buses. Anything you would like to add?? Sheena and Sagar are extremely grateful to all the family, friends, and vendors who put forth their efforts to make their dream wedding happen!
