How to Wear a Sari

Posted on March 16, 2012September 21, 2013

I LOVE what CTC West did to a Life Magazine piece on how to wear a sari.

They took the black and white photos and created a color shoot modeled after it.

Bookmark this page if you need to remember to how to fold your pleats and tie the pallu!

This was the only photo that confused me so I would ignore it when tying a sari. Do remember that when tucking in the pleats into the waistband, the pleats face the left (if you are the sari-wearer).

Couple pro-tips on wearing a sari:

  • Make sure your pleats are nice and straight, but don’t be overly obsessed with them
  • Wear a bra! Please wear a bra, and make sure that bra is hidden. Indian people go crazy when they see a bra. Hopefully your choli (top) has little bra buttons where you can tie in the straps so they don’t move around.
  • When folding the pallu (end part that goes over the shoulder), don’t let it be too long. It’s especially hard when you are short, but don’t let it fall to the ground level. Unless that is the style, then more power to you.
