Roses are Red & So Is My Wedding Dress! {21 Fabulous Gowns for Brides}

Posted on February 20, 2012January 4, 2014

Red wedding gowns are not the “in” thing. But they are classic and yield a sense of romantic sophistication. It’s unfortunate that more brides don’t venture into the red world.

I mean look at this silk red gown.

Can you say, WOWOW?!

Sure in old, Christian societies a red wedding dress symbolized a bride’s sin: married as a non-virgin.

But in many Asian and Arabic communities, red is considered auspicious and linked to family, health, and prosperity. There is no shortage of red saris and lenghas for brides to be.

Contemporary times are mixing East and West, old and new, white and red. Unfortunately brides-to-be who want a red gown have limited options. Few wedding boutiques carry the color, and you can be hard pressed at even department stores for red gown style dresses.

    I love these dresses! I’ve been looking for red gowns as I want an offbeat wedding dress. Plus white looks drab on me.

    Thank you for putting this together!

    I really like your website, its awesome! So much eye candy! Btw about the non-virgin red dress thing, the whole white tradition was only made popular when Queen Victoria wore a white dress similar to her baptism dress for her wedding. Before that, Christian brides could wear any colour including black to their wedding. In France, red was the traditional colour of wedding dresses and Mary, Queen of Scots was considered to be ‘breaking the rules’ when she wore white to her wedding instead. The traditional colour of virginity in Christianity is blue because that is what the Virgin Mary wore.

    Just thought you might be interested! Keep up the good work.

      Thank you Riti! Wow, I didn’t know that about wearing blue or red for a white, that’s pretty cool. I guess it was Queen Victoria that made the white gown super popular.
