Samina and Majhar’s Sweet Bangladeshi Wedding

Posted on October 19, 2012January 2, 2014

We have a lovely wedding today from an adorable couple, Samina and Majhar from Virginia.

Three days of celebration marked their marriage after several years of long distance. While Samina worked in New York City, Majhar finished up his doctorate degree in engineering in Virginia. They met, fell in love, and planned a wedding in all this time.

We took a few moments to chat with Samina about their Banglasdeshi wedding. Doesn’t she looked the sweetest in the golden yellow sari?!

Tell us about the wedding!
The wedding ceremony was a traditional Bangladeshi wedding ceremony. The groom enters the ballroom first through a decorated gate. At the gate, he is generally shy, symbolized through the tissue over his mouth. His family & friends bargain with the bride’s side to enter the ballroom in a casual joking manner. Once the groom enters into the ballroom, the bride’s party enters.

I had my sister, nieces, newphews come in first. And then my dad and I walked in. After booth the bride & groom are together the religious ceremony begins. The Imam performs the ceremony and the couple signs the marriage certificate.

We had Bangladeshi food; samosas and piachu (fried vegetables) for appetizers. For the main meal, there was more Bangladeshi food, delicious meats and kebobs with palao (flavored rice) and vegetables. The wedding cake was European style from Stella’s Bakery in MD.

What was your favorite part of the wedding?
My favorite part of the wedding was at the reception, when my sister was the MC. She gave a fantastic speech and coordinate the singing, dancing and other speakers very well! It was very touching to hear everyone talk about us and come together to celebrate our marriage.
