Fall is here, and we’re joining the bandwagon of excited scarf and boot wearers and, of course – spiced drink fanatics! I’ll be posting weekly fall drink recipes so that you can enjoy a warm sip during this cool season in the comfort of your own home.
This week’s pumpkin spice chai latte brings together a fall favorite, pumpkin spice, and a Desi tradition, masala chai. Frothy, spiced milk meets the sharpness of concentrated masala chai for a familiar, but more luxurious taste.
Ingredients:
(Makes 1 drink)
1/4 cup of pure pumpkin puree
2 tsp of brown sugar
2/3 cup of milk (half and half is best, but any form or dairy-free variant will work too)
1 tsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp of chai masala
1/2 tsp of nutmeg
1 tea bag of your favorite masala chai (I like Wagh Bakri!)
How-To:
1. Mix the pumpkin puree, sugar, cinnamon, chai masala, and nutmeg together in a small bowl. The result should be a thick paste.
2. Brew the tea bag as per instruction. Only pour 1/3 of the usual amount of boiling water over the tea bag. You’ll want a concentrated “shot” of tea for a stronger taste and room for the milk.
3. Heat the milk over a stovetop on low-medium heat. Mix the pumpkin paste into the milk so that there are no lumps.
4. When the milk becomes frothy, remove it from the heat.
5. Pour the milk over the brewed tea bag to fill up your favorite mug. Sprinkle with extra cinnamon or add some whipped cream if desired.
6. Sip your drink, preferably while wearing some wooly knits and watching romcoms.
