Manish Malhotra’s visionary outfits always draw applause on the Lakme Fashion Week runway, but his cocktail collection for this year’s Winter/Festive Season fashion week hosted in Mumbai from Augugust 19th-24th was extra jawdropping. He used “The Gloss,” Lakme’s latest fashion statement, to create a shimmery, breath-taking ensemble of couture Indian lehengas, sarees, and fusion outfits.
The show opened and closed with a star-studded model ensemble – Varun Dhawan was a surprise guest, but he was welcomed onto the runway with cheers and applause. His fitted, grey blazer with black trousers looked elegant and smart. The maroon handkerchief adds some color to the efforlessly chic outfit.
Staying true to the glossy theme, Manish Malhotra designed his collection around shiny fabrics and dreamy colors. This light pink and coral saree-gown is one of his signature fusion pieces from the collection. As the saree becomes more globalized as a fashion statement, Malhotra uses its elegance and charm to design a flowing skirt – doubling the traditional Indian garment into a ballgown that can glide across a room (or runway!)
The use of pinks continues with this velvety, ombre gown – a standalone piece that’s accented by some heavy neck jewelry. Colors in the maroon family and the silver family were most commonly used at this runway show – playing into the “festive” mood of this winter’s Lakme Fashion Week.
The festivities wouldn’t be complete without some eye-catching lehengas made of shimmery silver fabric and embroidered with pearly beads! Manish Malhotra’s designs are known to feature heavy materials and borders in line with a graceful and royal image.
Kareena Kapoor was the showstopper for Manish Malhotra – and as always, she stole the show. Her draping deep purple and silver lehenga summarizes the thick velvet and intricate embroidery of Malhotra’s Gloss-inspired collection.
Manish Malhotra’s Grand Finale leaves us anticipate those winter cocktail parties! The emphasis of shimmery colors and thick fabrics suits the festive holiday season as much as it does the runway.
