The Sri Lankan Poruwa Ceremony is an ancient tradition that’s been handed down through the centuries. We love seeing modern interpretations of the ceremony that combine Eastern and Western elements to create something truly special.
Sashika and Devinda have done just that with their Poruwa Ceremony, which took place in Colombo earlier this year.
Sashika told us a little bit about her wedding day:
What was it like planning your wedding?
Although we are both grew up on opposite sides of the world, we both knew that we wanted to have a traditional Sri Lankan wedding while incorporating Indian/Western themes. We wanted an outdoor location, but while location scouting in Colombo we realized with the sweltering heat, we would have to choose an indoor location. The Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo had an indoor venue called the Atrium, which we converted into an indoor garden.
Tell us about your wedding looks.
We chose simple yet elegant white/cream outfits for our poruwa ceremony. For the reception, Devinda wore a suit, while I was in a lehenga lined with my mother’s wedding sari.
I knew I wanted to incorporate a part of my mother’s wedding day into ours and I even I had my bouquet wrapped in a piece of her bridal sari. Although henna is not normally worn for a Sri. lankan wedding, I had to have it done for our big day.
Such a beautiful day. Thank you Sashika and Devinda for sharing these photos with us and telling us all about it.
