Sonam Kapoor, daughter of mega Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor, is an actress, model and socialite. I best know her as a model a socialite who can dazzle any camera and soul in sight.
She is IT girl who knows how to blend eastern and western fashion and always look absolutely stunning.
Even though she just came out in Dolly ki Doli, I will hope she sticks to fashion and eventually (hopefully) becomes a spokesperson for an international NGO. Because nothing would be more awesome than having Sonam as the Amnesty International or United Nations representative.
I digress though! Because Sonam is a true style goddess, there are plenty of things us mere mortal women can learn from her. From attending weddings to movie premieres, we all can have a little Sonam in us.
I broke down her fashion sensibility into seven styles:
Lace – What’s not to love about lace?! There are many ways of sporting lace saris, but the important thing is to not go overboard. A entire sari made out lace will tear easily, so consider cutting it with a more durable fabric.
Sonam is rocking a vintage lace dress in white by Anamika Khanna.
Here’s a lace overlap by Dolce and Gabbana that’s reminiscent of the Elizabethan era.
Statement Jewelry
I think it’s impossible for Sonam to be separated from chunky statement pieces. From chand-balis, to massive polki necklaces, to the wacky nose ring at Cannes, Sonam always has her statement piece. Piece, not pieces – just one crazy jewelry item per outfit.
Bright Colors
A big fan of Manish Arora’s neon and wild collections, you’ll often see her wear his saris and skirts. When she goes for the bright and brighter color styles, her jewelry is minimal.
Narrow Pallus
Narrow pallus are very important for small framed women. If you’re slender and short, use light draping fabrics to form narrow pallus. Otherwise, you risk looking a whole lot wider. For everyone else, wear an average sized pallu, but don’t let it get fat.
Getting tips from sari draping master Kalpana Shah. She also wrote the book, The Whole Nine Yards.
Long Sleeves
If there’s one style of western clothing that is hard to master, it’s the long sleeve and jacket. Indian women rarely wear long sleeves, and when they wear jackets, they’re either cardigans or North Face fleeces. Neither are sexy. If you’re in for a cold night, bring a matching jacket for the sari – like actually have it custom made with the sari. Or get a few blouses made with long sleeves.
Bold Eyeliners
We love that 1960s Bollywood vintage look, and that cat eyeliner style. Even for myself, it’s one of my go-to styles for makeup.

High Collars
This is a look that not everyone can pull off; you have to have a long neck. But these Elizabethan style jackets and dresses are romantic and full of rebellion, even though they were the status quo of aristocracy during that time period.
You also apply any of these style tips to wedding fashion, and we’ve seen Sonam in plenty of wedding guest wear. Go through your wardrobe and see where you can have a little Sonam style!
