Sahar Atif is a well-known name in Pakistani bridal couture, but her Fasl-e-Nau collection was a new revolution altogether. Her goal for this collection was to bring out the traditional aura of Pakistani outfits with old-school trends such as tye-dying. Calling it a “fun concept” would be an understatement.
Bright colors are stunning and bold in almost every design. Even basic lehengas are turned into show-stopping masterpieces with their bright pink details and thick gold borders.
While most of the designs are salwar kameez, sarees, or cholis, there are some exciting new mixes thrown in there. One outfit features a bright blouse with gold pants, while another is a revealing take on the traditionally draped saree.
I loved the use of bright colors – especially the oranges and reds in cholis and dupattas. Making these colors the main feature of most of her designs was a great way to stand out amongst the more “traditional” wedding colors of pastels and metallic hues.
However, I thought the colorful dupattas could be overwhelming in some cases. This salwar kameez is very traditionally styled, with a neutral base color and a long headscarf – but the scarf/dupatta looks way too heavy for the otherwise small and tight-fitting outfit. The colors aren’t bright enough to pull off such a large accessory.
My favorite design is the pink and purpleĀ anarkali, modeled early in the show. The floral embroidery surprisingly navigates away from “tacky” very well. The pink and gold embellishments really make the jacket stand out – even though the dress also features long drapes of bright pink and purple cloth!
The ombre-esque skirt keeps the design easy on the eyes since the colors blend together. And the colorful display throughout ensures that the whole look is nothing short of enigmatic.
Sahar Atif definitely brings back the good fashion trends from the 80s and 90s with her use of bright colors and tye-dye-like patterns. The Fasl-e-Nau collection is fresh, fun, and funky enough for a modern-day bride. The style and cuts of each dress keep the look tied to tradition, while taking a bold step towards unexpected inspirations.
