It’s almost the new year! I always love new years because it is all about the glam and glitz. Even though by no means am I a party girl (I am more of a party naniji), I love getting dressed up, making a delicious dinner, and glamming away on French bubbles and yummy desserts.
To make my champagne glasses a little more glitzy, and a lot less IKEA-like, I decided to ombre glitter them. The best thing is that you can use any color combinations and any type of glass.
If you are making a whole glitter themed dinner party, be sure to check out our DIY glitter pumpkins.
What you need:
Glasses – here I used a dozen IKEA champagne glasses at $1.99 each
Mod Podge – the holy grail of glitter projects
Sponge brush or regular brush
Glitter! – You can use any type of glitter but I recommend colors glitter set, 24-Pack
Newspaper – because you are going to have exploded glitter everywhere
Aleene’s Spray Acrylic Sealer Matte Finish – to seal the glitter
1. Choose the glitters. Because I wanted to have my glasses be ombre in style, I chose three different glitter pinks: a dark magenta, a bright pink, and a light peony pink.
2. For the first layer, paint the part of the glass you want to glitter with mod podge. Sprinkle the dark pink, or whatever your foot (the base of the glass) color is.
3. Let each coat dry for 5-7 minutes and then mod podge paint *over* that layer. You want to get a nice even coat of glitter, which takes 3-4 coats. You can see in the photo below that one coat of glitter is already done and I’m working on the second layer.
4. Keep adding coats and gently create the ombre effect. I didn’t use any paper tape at the top to create straight lines, but you can if you want.
5. Okay a bunch of pretty glitter!
6. Done! Make sure to mod podge once more but don’t glitter. This is your last layer. To finish them, you can use a sealant and spray each glass. Let them dry for at least a day.
Alternatively, some you can bake them in the oven. I tried that with one glass. I put it in oven (not turned on), turned on the oven to 350ºF and let it bake 30 minutes. Then turn the oven off but don’t take the glass out! Let it cool in there.
Honestly, the baking didn’t make much of difference compared to letting them air dry for a day and sealing them.
I made a pretty blue-green peacock glitter glass because I wanted something special as the host.
Be sure to clean the glasses in lukewarm water with a bit of soap. Don’t soak them and dry them immediately with a towel. I’ve already used mine twice and have not lost any glitter-ness!
Besides using these glasses for the New Year, you can use them at any party, in gift baskets to your bridesmaids, or for a bridal shower. The possibilities are endless.
