Are you in need of a last-minute romantic gesture for Valentines Day? You’re in luck – scones can be made in a pinch and shaped into a cute little heart to present to your valentine at breakfast. He/she will never suspect that you made the hearty treat with ingredients just lying around your pantry!
I embellished this typical British teatime snack with cocoa powder and hazelnut milk for a rich, chocolatey flavor – but the scones will taste yummy with any sweet flavoring that you can think of. Dried fruits and chocolate chips are great additions. I made the scones eggless as well – which proves just how little you need in your kitchen to make this romantic pastry happen!
Ingredients:
3 cups of flour
1/3 cup of butter or margarine
4 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 cup of fine sugar
3/4 cup of hazelnut milk
3 teaspoons of cocoa powder
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon of salt (not pictured)
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
How-To:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cocoa powder to a large mixing bowl. Add the vanilla extract and butter to the bowl on top of the dry ingredients.
3. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients using a rubber spatula or your (clean!) fingers.
4. Mix the ingredients until the dough is dry, lumpy but slightly moist.
5. Add the milk to the mixture while stirring. Mix the ingredients together until they form a crumbly dough.
6. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to a height of about an inch.
7. Using a small cookie cutter, stamp hearts out of the rolled dough. You’ll want to dip the cookie cutter in flour first so the dough doesn’t stuck on it.
8. Carefully peel out the leftover dough and roll it together. Roll it back out again, and stamp out more hearts until all the dough is used up.
9. Arrange the heart molds in rows on a floured baking sheet. They can be placed close together as the scones will not spread much while baking.
10. Brush the tops of the scones with a little bit of hazelnut milk so they will get flaky.
11. Bake the scones for 20 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or until they start to brown slightly and harden.
12. Remove the scones from the baking sheet as soon as they are removed from the oven. Set aside to cool.
13. Enjoy with powdered sugar, jam, or peanut butter for a delicious, chocolatey treat!
Happy Valentines Day!
