Both Lakme and AIFW had some inspirational outfits for brides-to-be this year, ranging from the dreamy princess collection Anushree Reddy shared to the more traditional, silken fabrics from Gaurang Shah. Of course, that doesn’t mean that wedding guests can’t learn a thing or two from India’s biggest runway shows!
Wedding guests have a lot to live up to as well – since Indian weddings can go on for days, a guest will need multiple outfits to wear for the mehendi, sangeet, and the big reception. However, a guest doesn’t want to upstage the bride with intense fashion statements or extra embezzled outfits. Guest attire should be elegant, relatively conservative (unless you know the couple very well), and most of all, versatile – so that you can wear the outfit again at another wedding or function, of course.
If you’ve got some wedding invitations sitting on your kitchen counter, this post should help you get started on deciding what outfits you’ll want to invest in for the upcoming South Asian wedding season this summer:
Ridhi Mehra
Pastel green is a color that looks great in any season, so this piece will definitely get its use during current and future wedding ceremonies.
Shilpa Reddy
Burnt orange, floral borderings, and thick fabric make for a statement saree that stands out without stealing the spotlight. The colors are fun, and the striped blouse adds a bit of personality to the look.
Farah Sanjana
This crop top and flowing skirt ensemble is perfect for summer weddings. The blue is bold, but the pattern is simple enough to wear every few years without getting called out on it.
Suneet Varma
This outfit will fit in at any fancy wedding reception, indoors or outdoors. Black, white, and pink is a timeless coordination, and since the outfit isn’t beaded, it isn’t over-the-top in its flair.
Neha Agrawal
Perfect for Western or Eastern ceremonies, this dress is silky, floral, and bright. The royal motif at the bottom is fun without being too conspicious. Wear it to a spring or summer reception to twirl around on the dance floor.
Iika for Anamiika
Deep purple and silver are a classic combination that’ll suit any formal reception. The pieces aren’t multicolored, so they can be worn as separates to mix and match at future events too.
Satya Paul
A bright, happy saree is a must-have for any wedding guest wardrobe. It’s best for outdoor ceremonies, but at any Indian event, it’ll fit right in amongst the bold display of colors.
Archana Rao
If muted colors are more your thing, this saree is floaty and fabulous to look great without standing out too much. The elegance of the embedded pearls and cut-out floral blouse is really understated.
Yogesh Chaudhary
You can’t go wrong with black and white, especially if it’s got a pop of baby blue like this saree. The floral pattern makes it work for summer weddings, but the black on white embroidery can be worn in any season.
Anju Modi
This anarkhali is a bit of a fashion statement, but it’s a safe one that’ll fit in at any theme or color scheme of a wedding ceremony. Light blue and lightly patterned, the dress features striped long sleeves as the real eyecatcher.
Grand Finale
Bright orange is truly at home at South Asian weddings, which are often full of color. This anarkhali is simple, but heavily decorated with statement jewelry, colorful floral patterns, and sequined leggings. It’s an easy outfit to look good in!
