I recently spoke to Dina Patel, co-founder and CEO of Didi’s Wardrobe. Didi’s Wardrobe is pretty cool new website dedicated to selling off your saris, lenghas, and jewelry that is gathering dust. And that means buying these clothes at fantastic prices.
I spend a few minutes to interview her about the concept and her passion.
Why did you start Didi’s Wardrobe?
Didi’s Wardrobe is actually an idea I had back in 2001 with a friend of mine, but we just never had the time to act upon it due to our demanding careers in New York. After spending 10 years in investment banking, I decided it was time to test the concept.
I realized that our community spends too much money buying expensive clothing to only wear once or twice before being relegated to the back of the closet. Instead, why not create a place where we can share our wardrobe and access a large selection of clothing?
This concept became Didi’s Wardrobe. Our site is perfect for a wide range of consumers – from South Asians to non-South Asians that are looking to find a great deal on Indian wear. Wedding season or not, we have a selection that will make guests happy: wearing new sarees, lehengas or kurtas without spending a fortune. Most items are up to 80% off the retail price, which makes it a more affordable option.
How does buying and selling work on the site?
Selling your clothes and jewelry is easy. There are two ways that pieces are added to our collection – either through sellers posting their own items or the sellers sending us a box of their items to post through our We Post for You service.
The easier way to sell items is for sellers to send us their items. We inspect the items for defects and stains, take photos, and post the items to the website. These items are housed in our warehouse, so buyers can feel comfortable that the items have been thoroughly inspected by our team and rated properly on our site.
Anyone who buys from the website can contact the seller to ask questions about the item. We’re a bit like eBay where users and sellers can interact with each other but also that we can do the posting and interact with buyers too.
How can Didi’s Wardrobe help brides-to-be?
Because of our large collection and online location in the US, brides can easily surf through the site and buy what they want. Many of our outfits are great to complete a bridal trousseau or used at poojas and functions related to the wedding. We also have a great selection of jewelry and accessories that can complete a bride’s outfit.
The site is also perfect for all of the bride’s friends, family and guests that will need something to wear during all of her wedding events. Attendees can finally buy something new for the big weekend, without breaking the bank.
After the wedding, brides can sell all of those heavy pieces that probably will never be worn again or even sell those extra gifts that she will never get a chance to wear.
What’s your favorite part of this job?
Seeing that the business is benefiting our community! It’s been great to see the viability of the business and very exciting educating both buyers and sellers about Didi’s Wardrobe. We are very excited to help cater to the wedding season in the upcoming months as brides are looking for affordable and easy ways to dress their guests, family members and bridesmaids.
