Name: Peonies
Latin Name: Paeonia of plant family Paeoniaceae
Season: Spring
Meaning: Honor and riches
Origins: Asia, Southern Europe, and Western North America
The name “peony” comes from the Greek god Paeon, who invoked the wrath of his tutor Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Paeon was saved from his demise by Zeus when he was turned into a peony flower.
The peony thrives in many different climates, making it a versatile choice for wedding decor. Peonies can survive harsh winters, which they actually require for bud formation. They bloom in the spring and require little maintenance or tending once they are planted.
Peonies come in a variety of colors, with red, pink, and white being the most commonly appreciated colors for decor. Lasting more than a week when cut and placed in a vase, peonies are also great for centerpieces and hangings.
As a symbol of honor and prosperity, peonies are valued in China – even serving as their traditional flower. They are often gifted as 12th wedding anniversary flowers to represent the romance and good fortune of a long, happy marriage.
