Indian weddings are multi-event occasions – but let’s not forget about all the pre-wedding festivities. Often the bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner and bridal shower are just as much fun as the wedding itself.
Since these events are primarily Western customs, it can be hard for Indian brides to infuse their culture into these parties. With that being said, it can be done. If you’re planning a bridal shower for a girl who would like a bit of desi flavor infused into her day, read on! It might as simple as just incorporating these ten fun elements.
1. Bollywood music.
It can probably be different from the beat-thumping music that is played during the reception – we suggest putting together a playlist mixing slow-paced Bollywood ballads along with some uptempo songs. This is the perfect soundtrack for your Desi bridal shower.
2. A Shah Rukh Khan poster.
In celebration of her upcoming wedding, allow the bride-to-be to give her first love a proper goodbye.
3. Colorful bangles.
Set up a display of beautiful multi-colored bangles and allow the other girls in attendance to choose their own set. Or, have guests guess how many bangles can fit on the bride’s arm and turn it into a contest!
4. Chai.
Turn the popular tea party bridal shower routine on its head by serving up sweet, spicy, milky chai instead of standard English tea.
5. A Bollywood trivia game.
Let your guests duke it out by answering trivia questions about some of Bollywood’s biggest hits. Or if you prefer….
6. A Bollywood dance-off:
Encourage guests to make up short Bollywood dances on the spot and battle it out. Let the ultimate winner take home a fabulous prize.
7. A make-your-own kati roll bar:
Everyone loves a good taco bar, right? It’s the perfect party food, but if you want to make an event more “Desi” try serving kati rolls instead. Set up roti, fillings, toppings and chutneys and allow your guests to customize their own rolls. Perfect if you’re throwing a lunch event!
8. A tikka for the bride:
Some girls like to give the bride a tiara when it’s time for her bridal shower…but that doesn’t fly as well if it’s a Desi shower! Instead of a crown, buy the bride a beautiful ethnic tiara to wear through the event.
9. All your favorites aunties.
Duh. It’s not a party without them.
10. Samosas.
Because they are the greatest party food of all time. There is no room for debate.
