We are back with part II of Anokhee and Mital’s wedding. Yesterday we featured their beautiful henna and garba events and today we have their wedding.
We spoke to Anokhee to learn more about her wedding.
Tell us about the wedding!
The wedding was based on a traditional hindu ritual. We had four days of events. For the first two days we had functions at home. We sang wedding songs, and also we had a grahshanti and haldi ritual . Both days we had feast mainly Gujarati authentic food. Our family came from different states. Few family members specially flew from India for the wedding.
On the first wedding night we had a Henna & Garba. Garba night is usually held the night before the wedding and involves plenty of dancing. Our family members also prepared surprised skits and slidshow for us.
The next day was the wedding. We had traditional Hindu rituals and the whole ceremony was around an hour long. Before the wedding, the groom’s side did a procession, the baraat, which was full of dancing!
The wedding was followed by a reception with a cocktail hour in between to let guests mingle and give us time to change. Our reception was a combination of Indian and western culture. There was a cake cutting and speeches from family followed by dinner and dancing.
The night ended with a lot of dancing. Everyone said “goodbye” to us holding sparklers. It was beautiful.
What foods did you have that is part of your community?
On the first day we had authentic Indian food, and next day we had Mexican food for main course, and Indian dessert with cake.
What was the hardest part of planning the wedding?
The hardest part of the wedding planning was decorations. We really wanted to do it by ourselves and getting everything organized was difficult.
Where did you get your wedding outfit and jewelry and how did you pick it out?
We went to my hometown, Ahmedabad, in India, for shopping. My mom helped us pick almost everything.
What was your favorite part of the wedding days?
There were many awesome parts but the most special part was our family members organized surprised skits, and a powerpoint presentation for us. That was amazing. It was very nostalgic to see our old pictures and be able to cherish those moments again.
What one piece of advice do you give future brides to be?
Don’t stress about little things. They do fall in place at the time of the wedding. Enjoy each and every moment of your wedding. This precious time will never come back.
Thanks Anokhee for sharing your wedding! Now time for photos.
