Last week saw the inaugural Aamby Valley Indian Bridal Week in Mumbai, India, a first-of-its-kind fashion week dedicated exclusively to wedding couture and design.
Marking the start of the big fat wedding season in India, the event took place between 29 October and 2 November and featured a series of 12 fashion shows with designs by the likes of Manish Arora, Rocky S, Vikram Phadnis, Abhishek Dutta, Riyaz Gangji, and Ashima Leena.
Designs included not only traditional sarees and lehengas, but also cocktail attire and Western gowns, as well as menswear.
The event attracted India’s fashion and Bollywood elite, including Rahul Dev, Narmada Ahuja, Kangana Ranaut (who sparked controversy for her statements criticizing over-the-top weddings), Shriya Saran, Sophie Choudry, Rituparna Sengupta, and Dia Mirza, who stole the Rocky S show in unconventional white.
However, the event was not without its gaffes. Some claimed the runway was poorly designed, resulting in spectators not getting a clear view of the many fashions as well as a model tripping (view video of the incident here), and critics complained of ‘fashion fatigue.’
At any rate, Indian Bridal Week was a great display of the style and beauty associated with Indian weddings, as well as the hard work and craftsmanship that goes into creating couture designs.
