Lakme Fashion Week may be the most glamorous fashion and style event the Indian social calendar has to offer, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe from over-the-top, ridiculous displays of bad taste.
Sometimes the runway was panoply of wonder and beauty, and at other times it had us all saying ‘ugh, stop’ or ‘no, just no.’ Join me in BFIW’s first ever ‘Ugh, No,’ a collection of all the worst runway looks from Lakme this year, and I’ll give you the rundown on all the dresses that made us gag.
1) I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – what’s with all these pink satin bows on Anushree Reddy‘s princess dresses? Like 1) it makes it look like the model is one grab away from being undressed (in a very un-Draupadi-like way) and 2) is Reddy dressing toddlers? What grown woman wears pink satin bows on everything? Ugh, no.
2) Bride of Frankenstein, move aside. Oh my gosh, I can’t stop snickering at the way Anju Modi‘s styled all her models (except Malaika Arora Khan, of course – looks like her publicist was watching out for her). This look is so faux-vant garde, all I can think is someone somewhere’s not being honest with Modi.
3) How boring is this dress? It’s so boring I can’t even figure out a clever joke because I’m yawning so hard. It does nothing for Kalki Koechlin’s waist and she looks like she’s about to blend into the scenery. Kommal Sood should feel embarrassed sending a beige number down her runway on a Bollywood actress – like what a waste of a celebrity. This look is just a giant ugh, no.
4) There’s no way you can convince me this dress from Purvi Doshi is anything other than a circus tent with sleeves. The bright colors, the unflattering shape, the volume – tell me that Doshi didn’t just sew up all the scraps from the fabric store’s remnant bin. Major Ugh from me.
5) I don’t really understand what makes this outfit fashion or runway-worthy. Manish Malhotra spun out a lot of gold this season with his gorgeous neutral color palettes and distinctive lace overlays, but this is something else. It literally looks like a housecoat made out a set of Ikea’s discount silk-ish bedsheets – there is nothing vogue about this look. The model even looks uncomfortable wearing it. 0/10 for the straightjacket feel alone.
Honorable mention for an Ugh, No:
I can’t make up my mind about Sushmita Sen’s look for Koesch Bajaj – it’s definitely daring but it’s also definitely vampy in a sad cougar way. Sexy is good. Aging with poise is good. Those fingerless gloves, though, are beyond tacky. This look scores about an ‘Uh, whatever.’ I’ve seen better from the former Miss Universe.
I hope you enjoyed this edition of ‘Ugh, No.’ I’ll see you guys at the next fashion week.
Indian designers sometimes go SO wrong then they attempt the whole Euro/American thing! Urgh
