Indian weddings aren’t sprints, they’re marathons – very colorful, loud, indulgent marathons.
Most desi weddings don’t consist of a few small events leading up to one all-out party; they’re one big event after another. While this collection of parties is incredibly fun for guests, it can also be exhausting for the bride and groom.
Here are five things all couples should do to maintain energy for their big fat Indian weddings.
1. Take a little more time off from work: A lot of brides are able to work all week, take a personal day on Friday, get married on Saturday and head on the honeymoon on Sunday. This might not be the case for an Indian bride, though. The number of functions we have makes it really tough to swing work and last-minute wedding prep without feeling completely run down by the time the event is scheduled.
2. Stash comfortable shoes at all your events: With all the partying you’ll do, you won’t just be mentally exhausted – your body will also take a hit. You will be on your feet a lot during your wedding weekend so make sure you’re keeping yourself comfortable. Bring comfortable wedges or even flats to all your events and change into them when you feel your feet getting sore. The last thing you want to do is limp down the aisle!

3. Keep a healthy diet: What you eat really affects your energy levels. You will probably be indulging in tasty food during your wedding events so keep your lunches and breakfasts light and clean. Start your days with oatmeal, sip green smoothies and snack on fruit and nuts to keep your energy levels high.
4. Consider starting your post-wedding brunch later: Waking up early and pulling yourself together the morning after your wedding is really hard. To avoid feeling completely overwhelmed by the lineup, consider having your brunch later in the morning – or even hosting a post-wedding farewell dinner instead.
5. Slip out of your pre-wedding event early: If you’re having a sangeet the night before your wedding, consider ducking out early so you can go home and get a bit of beauty sleep. It sounds crazy for a bride to leave her own wedding event early, but most guests won’t notice once they’re in the throes of partying.
